The Green Laboratory Gatersleben has been established on the ResearchCampus to promote the education of school students. Its uniqueness is that is the only such school laboratory in Germany with a focus on plant biotechnology. It has been attracting over 5,000 visitors per year. The aim of the Green Laboratory is to provide the younger generation in Saxony-Anhalt and beyond with something extra above what they are taught in school, and in particular to give them an opportunity to experience modern research, especially in the field of plant biotechnology.

We believe in the need to awaken the interest of our young audience in the natural sciences and the environment, to enhance their curiosity about natural phenomena, to encourage them, through their own practical activities, to recognise that these phenomena are governed by certain rules and laws and to educate them to deal responsibly with nature. These aims chime with the second focus of the Green Laboratory, which is to contribute directly to vocational orientation and career preparation, thereby addressing the impending shortage of skilled workers trained in the natural sciences.
