The Plant Reproductive Biology laboratory is primarily working on the establishment and application of principles and methods of transgenesis and genome editing as well as the production of fully homozygous plants from haploid cells. The overarching objective of the research work is to contribute to improving the performance and product quality of crops. In a third-party funded research project, buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum) is to be tapped for broader use in agriculture and a versatile and health-promoting diet through the development and application of biotechnological plant breeding technologies. 

Your tasks:

  • Establishment of methods of adventitious shoot formation for plant regeneration in vitro, genetic transformation and genome editing for buckwheat
  • Development of generic vector modules for buckwheat and design and cloning of transformation vectors
  • Establishment of protoplast cultures as a model system for transient transgene expression to validate functional components of genome editing  
  • Comprehensive analysis of genetic modifications at the molecular level and their effects on plant features
  • Active cooperation in a research network with colleagues from various other scientific institutions
  • Presentation of research results at scientific events
  • Preparation of project reports and scientific publications
  • Supervision of students' project work. 

Your qualifications and skills:

  • You have completed a doctorate in biology, biotechnology, agricultural sciences or a similar subject area.
  • You have very good knowledge in the fields of classical and molecular genetics, cell biology, botany and plant biotechnology.
  • You have practical experience with plant cell cultures as well as molecular cloning methods and analytical procedures.
  • Very good written and spoken English skills round off your profile.
