Mission

In der Gruppe „Quantitative Genetik“ erforschen wir omics-basierte Züchtungsstrategien, die es erlauben, den Selektionsgewinn in (Vor-)Zuchtprogrammen zu steigern. Neben unserer Modellkulturpflanze Weizen arbeiten wir mit Gerste, Sojabohne, Kamille, Gartenbohne, Mais, Roggen, Arabidopsis, und Raps.

Die Forschungstätigkeiten der Gruppe lassen sich in drei Projekte gliedern:

1) Neue Strategien zur Erschließung pflanzengenetischer Ressourcen im Weizen;

2) Steigerung des Ertrags und der Ertragsstabilität bei Selbstbefruchtern durch Hybridzüchtung; und

3) Innovative Methoden im Bereich der statistischen Genomik.

Projekte

Neue Strategien zur Erschließung pflanzengenetischer Ressourcen im Weizen

Für den Weizen werden weltweit mehr als eine halbe Million genetischer Ressourcen in Genbanken erhalten. Der Aufschluss der verborgenen vorteilhaften genetischen Diversität ist wichtig für die nachhaltige Steigerung des Ertragspotenzials. Wir entwickeln und evaluieren daher neue omics-basierte Vorzüchtungsstrategien, die den gezielten Aufschluss wertvoller Diversität genetischer Ressourcen für die Weizenzüchtung ermöglichen.

Steigerung des Ertrags und der Ertragsstabilität bei Selbstbefruchtern durch Hybridzüchtung

Die Hybridzüchtung nutzt das Phänomen Heterosis, um die Ertragsfähigkeit von Nutzpflanzen zu steigern. In fremdbefruchtenden Kulturarten wie dem Mais hat sich die Hybridzüchtung gegenüber anderen Züchtungsmethoden bereits erfolgreich durchgesetzt. Durch die Erschließung von Heterosis bei selbstbefruchtenden Kulturarten besteht auch hier die Möglichkeit, deren Erträge nachhaltig zu steigern und deren Ertragsstabilität nahezu zu verdoppeln. Wir nutzen die „Omics“-Datenrevolution und entwickeln Ansätze, um Hybridzüchtung auch bei Selbstbefruchtern zu ermöglichen. Dies umfasst Ansätze zur Etablierung, Verbesserung und gezielten Erweiterung heterotischer Gruppen und Muster.

Innovative Methoden im Bereich der statistischen Genomik

Genomik-unterstützte Züchtung erhöht den Selektionsgewinn pro Zeiteinheit. Wir entwickeln innovative Methoden im Bereich der statistischen Genomik zum vertieften Verständnis der genetischen Architektur und zur Vorhersage komplexer Merkmale. Dabei berücksichtigen wir Additiv-, Dominanz- und epistatische Interaktionseffekte von Genen. Die entwickelten Verfahren werden mit umfangreichen simulierten und experimentellen Daten verschiedener Kulturarten evaluiert.
