In der Arbeitsgruppe werden Untersuchungen zur Regulation des Sekundärstoffwechsels bei Modell- und Nutzpflanzen durchgeführt.

Sekundärmetaboliten besitzen eine große Bedeutung für die Interaktion der Pflanze mit ihrer Umwelt, da sie z. B. als Schutz- oder Abwehrstoffe wirken können. Pflanzen bilden eine Vielzahl an Sekundärmetaboliten infolge von Stress. Die akkumulierten Komponenten können antimikrobielle Wirkungen zeigen, zum UV-Schutz beitragen, antioxidative Funktion ausüben oder als Signalmoleküle fungieren.

Weiterhin steht die Bedeutung sekundärer Inhaltsstoffe für die menschliche Ernährung im Blickpunkt der Arbeiten. In Zusammenarbeit mit externen Kooperationspartnern werden potenzielle gesundheitsfördernde Wirkungen von Flavonoiden in der menschlichen Ernährung untersucht.

Für die Identifizierung regulatorischer Faktoren, die steuernd auf die Allokation von Ressourcen in verschiedene Klassen von Sekundärstoffen einwirken, werden Metabolit-, Proteom- und Transkriptomansätze eingesetzt. Durch die Verwendung transgener Pflanzen und Mutanten soll weiterhin die Bedeutung einzelner Metabolite und Proteine in der Abwehr von biotischem und abiotischem Stress aufgeklärt werden. Die Untersuchungen werden an der Modellpflanze Arabidopsis und mit Gerste, Weizen und Solanaceen durchgeführt. Die räumliche Verteilung von Metaboliten wird über MS-basierte Verfahren (MALDI-MS-Imaging) untersucht.

Im Vordergrund stehen zelluläre Reaktionen auf Kältestress, die über Metaboliten-Profilierung und molekulare Charakterisierung von Kandidatengenen analysiert werden. Die analytischen Techniken zur Metabolitanalysen werden auch für die Charakterisierung von Akzessionen der Genbank eingesetzt. Weitere Untersuchungen zielen auf die Charakterisierung von Kandidaten der Trockentoleranz und Stickstoff-Effizienz in Kartoffel auf Proteinebene. 

Die Gruppe hat Techniken der Proteomanalyse als Bestandteil funktioneller Genomanalysen etabliert. Sie beruhen auf der LC-basierten Trennung von Peptiden nach Verdau der Proteine. Die Proteomanalysen schließen post-translationale Modifikationen wie Phosphorylierung ein. Die Auswertung der umfangreichen Datensätze geschieht in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Gruppen der Bioinformatik.
